“Silly faggot, dix are for chix” shirt

A man sports a "Silly faggots" T-shirt at an AIDS walk.

The South Florida Blade is reporting that an employee of RoadSafe, a company contracted to erect barricades for the Florida AIDS Walk, sported a T-shirt that read: “Silly faggot, dix are for chix.” The shirt also has a picture of a rabbit resembling the Trix Rabbit. The employee was terminated after the incident.

What a charming shirt to wear to an AIDS walk. I could go on and on about how inaccurate the perception that AIDS is a gay disease actually is, but I’ll save that.

  1. God, really you are so stupid that I shouldn’t bother, but what the hell I have ten minutes to kill.

His shirt slams a particular group of people both with the derogatory term “faggot” as well as espousing an overall anti-homosexual theme. Having these views makes one a bigot. Just as hating, mocking, slamming, attacking, etc. any particular broad group in its totality is bigotry. Sure if being a member of particular group implies a particular belief (e.g. Nazis hate Jews) saying something about that particular belief is valid. But summarizing and mocking or speaking hatred against all members of a particular broad group (e.g. race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion) is bigotry.

The term homophobia is accurate because so many people have an irrational fear of homosexuals. For whatever reason they see homosexuals as an afront to them personally. Even though if two guys hook up it causes no harm to heterosexual couples or anyone else for that matter. The only way to describe the opinions, statements and actions of anti-gay marriage groups or far right wing pundits is that of fear.

Just because something is an opinion does not somehow exclude it from being bigotry. Sure he has anti-homosexual views and those are his opinions. He has the right to believe and even preach whatever beliefs he wants. He’s still a bigot. I have the right to hate black people. I don’t, but I have the right to if I wanted and I have the right to say the n-word and say all sorts of horrible things. I have that right. I’d still be a bigot. Bigotry is always, always based on opinions. So people like you sound really stupid when you say so-and-so isn’t a bigot they are just expressing their views. Their views are what makes them bigots.

Expressing offense at someone who has insulted a group you belong to or speaking out against someone who preaches hate is not itself bigotry. It is an expression based upon the particular person who said it. If I say that the head of some anti gay marriage coalition is a hate filled irrational lunatic I am not being heterophobic (for the record I am heterosexual, not that it matters but still). I am expressing an opinion about a particular person based upon that person’s particular actions. I am not summarizing and mocking all heterosexuals, I am not summarizing all Christians.

For your view to have merit you would have to suggest that people like Martin Luther King were bigots for speaking out against establishments and politicians and laws that were aimed at black people. Such an opinion would be absurd. It’s no different here. Of course gay people are going to speak out against the Anita Bryants, the James Dobsons or the Jerry Falwells of this world.

Those people are preaching irrational hatred of an overall group for no other reason than they feel they have the right to constrict the rights of a group of people. Have hatred fine, whatever, do as you please, but moving for political action against a particular group based on that hate will earn you well deserved counter-action.

You have the right to believe what you want. You have the right to say what you want. But if you speak hatred and generalized bile against some broad group, I have the right to call you a douche bag and point out the fact that you are a bigot.

    • Once again, people such as myself are misrepresented with the term homophobia. It has nothing to do with a phobia. Gays are not like a big hairy spider crawling across the couch. Also do not bother saying homophobia is about a lack of understanding or is about hate. I am both knoledgable in and do not hate spiders, but a very small phobia is present.

My stance towards gays is rooted is in a genuine distaste for them as individuals. What they do to each other is utterly disturbing to me. I classify this sort of deviancy from the norm with the actions of child molesters, people who pick their nose and eat it, murderers, the crazy guy that stares at you far too long to be normal…

In summary, gays are amongst the messed up people and I try to avoid them.

  3. The shirt isn’t offensive. It’s pointing out the obvious. Dicks are for Chicks. Something the mentally ill (aka homosexuals) seem to have forgotten.

    Common sense people… Common sense….

  4. Hi there, i really love reading your blog so much!
This is another one of my favorite blogs.

I though to ask you though and couldn’t find another way to contact you, but I would really like to see you do
a post on the US economic recession. I know this may be very out of the ordinary for your blog, but I really
enjoy how you think and would love to see your thoughts on this topic. Best regards from a fan!

    Thanks!

  5. It’s a funny shirt. You don’t HAVE to think gay people are super-great. You don’t have to. The problem with the gay agenda in the modern world is that people are being forced to pretend that being homosexual is just great and quite normal. It isn’t normal, sorry. Feel free to do what you do, but don’t try to brainwash me.
And what the hell is CHAZ BONO? He? She? It?

What do you think?
